Conte worked wonders for the blues and was able to clinch the title away from Tottenham Hotspur last season. But managers often make decisions that upset the Blues. Football is a game where squads are continually updated . Chelsea have always been relatively busy during the transfer periods signing a few players but the main issue is the players that Chelsea have sold. This article is going to take a look at all the midfielders that Chelsea sold in the past that they will live to regret, and there is so big names….
Nemanja Matić 🇷🇸 –
The Serbian international arrived at Stamford Bridge back in 2014 for a second time after Jose Mourinho re-signed the Centre Defensive mid from Portuguese side Benfica for a figure of £21 million. The ex Chelsea man signed a 5 and a half year contract but this contract came to an end early after Matić completed a move to rivals Manchester United for a fee of £40million. Prior to the move Matić made it clear he wanted to leave the club due to his lack of game time since Antonia Conte had taken over, this is understandable from Matić as a player of his quality should be getting first team football, although Conte should have given Matić a spot in the stating XI after being such a key player for Chelsea in the past. Matic has played well this season for United and has completed the 6th most passes in the Premier League only behind players such as De Bruyne. The now 31 year old made has made 31 appearances for the Red Devils and has been a solid man in the centre midfield for United, something that Chelsea has missed.
Oscar 🇧🇷 –
Oscar is one of the many footballers that has been taken away from European football to the Chinese Super League. In 2016 Shanghai signed the Brazilian attacking midfielder for an astonishing figure of £60 million. The now 25 year old showed great promise as part of Chelsea’s attack making an impressive 131 Premier League appearances for the club, with 76 wins. In addition he found the back of the net 21 times whilst assisting team mates 19 times. Since moving to China Oscar has slowed down and is no longer showing the potential that so many Chelsea fans used to see in him. Was it a mistake for hm to leave?
Juan Mata 🇪🇸 –
A fan favourite who also went to rival club Manchester United comes in the shape of Juan Mata, winner of Chelsea’s player of the year award for 2 seasons running was signed by David Moyes for £32million back in 2014. The little Spaniard was an exciting prospect whilst at the Blues and has maintained a regular starting place at United making more than 25 appearances for the last 4 seasons. With Chelsea struggling for creativity in the CAM spot, Mata or Oscar appear to be the perfect solution.
Kevin De Bruyne 🇧🇪 –
Perhaps the biggest name on this whole list that every Chelsea fan will want to forget is Kevin De Bruyne who has officially won the Premier League title this season with Manchester City. Chelsea signed De Bruyne for an absolute bargain of £6.7 million from Genk FC, but De Bruyne struggled for first team football at the Blues and was shipped out on loan to German side SV Werder Bremen where he continued to perform well. After retuning from loan he still struggled for first team football at the Bridge and as a result was sold to Wolfsburg for only €15 million. De Bruyne now plays Manchester City and is one of the best Midfielders in the world with 7 goals and 15 assists this season. Imagine where Chelsea would be if we still had De Bruyne.
